Motherhood is hard. It’s not a discussion or debate: it’s a fact. Mom’s around the world will take on more of the mental and physical load of family life – another fact. And it’s Mom’s everywhere that are desperate for those five minutes without being touched by little hands, needed by little faces and chattered to incessantly by little voices. Much as we all love our children, we also love the moments that we get to ourselves to be human beings without being someone else’s someone.
Mom’s need a break. Before you were a Mom, you were you. A person with goals and ambitions and needs that didn’t involve putting someone else first. The world has changed now; your world, and that’s wonderful and was your choice. But that doesn’t mean that you’re not fully entitled to run away every now and then to gather yourself and remember that you are a person with needs and wishes, too. With all of that in mind, you need some help from time to time to rediscover the woman behind the children and the house and all of the rest of it – and here are five ways that you can take that time just for you.
Go For A Workout. If you spent a lot of time killing it in the gym, you may miss those hours spent pounding out on the treadmill. You may also not have the energy to manage a long run anymore. Heading to your nearest fitness center to find a new class to join is the best way that you can rediscover yourself. All the stress, the frustrations, the worries that you feel can be worked out through sheer force of exercise. It’s an invigorating sensation.
Read A New Book. When you’re a Mom, the time to sit and read a book cover to cover is seemingly gone. One minute you’re watching the kids and interacting with them, the next you’re asleep on the sofa with your favourite TV show running in the background – and you’re missing it. Take time to be on your own with your favourite book and snack, and you can remember the pleasure of diving into the imagination of someone else for a while.
Pay For A Massage. All you need is an hour and someone in a spa. Carrying children around, housework and generally sitting on the floor to play with the kids can really ruin your back. Take a moment and pummel out those knots so that you can enjoy time with your kids in comfort again.
Go For A Walk. Walking is a good time to think clearly, but if you want to get some fresh air alone, plug in your favourite audio book and go for a power walk to the nearest scenic spot. You can get in a workout while listening to a book and feeling great at the same time.
Sink Into A Bath. Salts or bubbles, the choice is yours. Either way, you, a locked bathroom door and a vat of water to sink into to ease those aching muscles is a recipe for heaven.
