Most folks you ask, would tell you that when it comes to online gaming, it is a boys’ club. If you saw any of the advertisement for the most popular games, you understand why – most of them involved shooting and driving cars real fast – not among a girl’s most favorite things to do.
So imagine my surprise when I found out that online gaming is extremely popular among women, aged 35 or older! Guess I’ll have to wait a few years to find out… But seriously, here in America, as well as in the UK, there are more women over 35 than men that regularly play online gaming; all the information is from a report by Spil Games.
My favorite thing in the report by far: 73 percent of Turkish women aged 35-44 play online games. That’s three-quarters! Wow.
First step for me was to kit out my newly built “gaming room”. I bought myself a gaming desk after reading these gaming desk reviews, as well as a gaming optimized PC, keyboard and mouse. Oh, and a rather expensive headset that was also dubbed a “gaming headset” after reading this astro a40 review.
I then put my “newbie” gaming skills all to the test. I logged onto Unranked Smurfs, ordered myself a levelling package for a game called League of Legends and let them do their business. Once I got my account back at level 30, I logged on and begun the process of playing. Wow. I spent 8-hours on it and was consumed.
Why Women Play Online Games
Why not? Moving on.
What Kind of Online Gaming Women Prefer
In the US, the report says women prefer women’s puzzle games, matching games and Mahjong-style game. Teenage girls like role-play games, or acting in more grown-up situations (little do they know they’ll one day be missing those days of being young), cooking games and dress-up games. That makes sense to me, sounds like the kind of games teen girls would be interested in.
What caught my eye was the insight about a game called Sara’s Cooking Class – it is exactly as the title suggests, you get recipes and need to cook according to them. I tired it, it’s actually cute.
The report says that Sara has a “cross-generational appeal” meaning, moms are playing it with their daughters. I love that!
Did You Know There Are Online Casinos in America?
UK women really surprised me, I must say. Their most favorite online gaming is the online casino, and especially online slot machines. The report says that it’s no surprise there are more and more launches of new top slot machine sites as seen on SlotSpinners.co, because the demand for them keeps going up, because of women!
Now I’m not judging, and we have to remember that online gambling is legal in the UK, it doesn’t have the same reputation as here. And you know what, online gambling is legal also in there states: Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware. Nevada and Jersey make sense because of Las Vegas and Atlantic City, the two biggest gambling destinations in America, but Delaware? So I looked into it myself and there are actually casinos in Delaware – four of them – who would have guessed?
Getting back to the topic of UK women. Aside those posh sounding accents which I love, they are the biggest group that plays online slot machines in the UK, for actual money too. Thought that was interesting.
I never played a slot machine so I decided to give it a try, to see what’s the big attraction. I found a UK site that gives people the chance to win money on casino slots called PrimeSlots.com. I didn’t play for real money, but just for fun in the free demo mode.
What can I say? There are some pretty games there, with nice graphics but all the games pretty much follow the same logic it’s not like card games. You push the button, the reels spin and that’s about it. I’m guessing that if you play with your own cash you don’t get bored because there’s probably an adrenaline factor going on.
So it was an interesting learning experience. The web is cool this way, you can learn a lot and try many things. In a way, women playing online games no less than men especially when they get older shows that there’s a basic need of having fun for all humans—doesn’t matter the gender.
Now I’m just waiting for my little girl to grow up a bit so we could play Sara’s Cooking Class together – it’s gonna be so much fun!
