Being a mom is crazy. Crazy! Sometimes I wonder just how some moms do it. Having two boys and learning to potty train them have been more that a ride. More like climbing Mount Everest, getting to the top and realizing your mind has tricked you, and you still have three miles to go. IT IS NEVER ENDING! But luckily I have done this two times, and I have just a couple of tips for you.
1. You can not force it.
If there’s one thing I learned about potty training is that you cannot force it. I can’t tell you how many times I tried to force it, and it just doesn’t work. This one is simple. You child will give hints when that time is near. Pulling off their diaper, holding themselves, or hiding when they have to go poop are all good signs of being ready.
2. Timing is everything.
Once your child is showing you that you are ready it comes down to timing. Start timing them when they go to the bathroom. I did every 15 minutes. Every 15 minutes I would head over to the toilet, sit them down, reset my timer and repeat.
3. Using Pull-Ups
Once my child started to bring me their diaper is when I started pulling out the Pull-Ups. This not only made my children feel like they were wearing their big boy pants but also helped with them pulling off their diaper. This gave them confidence in being able to hold their bladder. Because even if they had a tiny little accident it didn’t make them feel like they failed.
4. Pops, candy, toys.
Who said candy gives cavities? No mom potty training ever! When you’re on the third day of amazing potty training and all of a sudden your oh so loving, adorable child decided they want nothing to do with the toilet or going into that bathroom much less peeing or pooping in that perfectly good toilet you have to be quick on your toes. This is when cavities are the last thing on your mind, and you will do just about anything to make that oh so loving, adorable turned monster child a pice of candy if they go pee. Now pooping is on a whole nother level of prize. We liked to set un open cars on the back of the toilet for a reward for going poop.
