The other day it was my brother and sister-n-laws 3 year anniversary (Happy Anniversary) and on Johns wall he wrote to his wife this “Having a nice, hill country steak dinner with my bride for our anniversary. God is good! Thank you to my folks for assisting us with Avery. at Cross Roads Steak House.” What do you think of when you hear this?
I have heard this before, a couple of older people at my church have said it and it makes me so happy every time I hear it. For one it makes me think of my wedding day right? When you hear “My Bride” you think of the woman in the white dress, the most beautiful woman in the room who is glowing with love right? I think of all the gorgeous wedding photos where everyone is laughing, smiling, hugging and cheering – similar to the photos you can find on JeffTurnbull.co.uk. I think of bouquets of flowers, confetti raining down, tears of joy and lots of champagne (maybe a bit too much champagne).
I feel so happy when I hear “My bride is doing this” or “this is my bride so and so”. It has a feeling of deep connection between two people who love each other very much. It also tells a story of togetherness – of two people being brought together in love to become each others. This, of course, is what a wedding ring symbolises. Unending and infinite love binding two individuals together as one. They are no longer individuals, but they belong to each other. The words “my groom” doesn’t quite have the same ring to it, but it’s still romantic and would be lovely to hear.
Weddings are one of those occasions that are so happy and full of joy that even if something goes wrong, everyone just laughs and thinks “what the heck, let’s just celebrate!” and then everyone tucks into a nice slab of cake. We can all eat cake whenever we like, but something about a wedding cake sliced in unison by a happy couple just makes it taste better. The joining together of two families and the reunion of old friends makes it even better. So, the words “my bride” remind me of all this and I love it. Happy Anniversary to John and Rae-lyn, I love you both so much!
